Background

Our client is one of the largest Zinc producers globally. Client was exploring options to treat 4 MLD of underground mining effluent generated at one of its largest mining sites in Rajasthan, India to achieve ZLD. Client wanted to decrease freshwater consumption and adhere to its compliance and sustainability goals to achieve 3R’s for water. High salinity(TDS up to 15,000 ppm), corrosiveness and presence of heavy metals and salts(CaSO₄, CaCl₂, NaCl) along with seasonal variation in water parameters posed a huge challenge to treat the effluent.

Solution

To address these challenges, we offered a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment and ZLD plant on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis for 15 years.

The process includes

  • Pre-treatment: Rigorous management of suspended solids and heavy metal impurities.
  • Membrane-Based Recovery: Utilizing Israeli-patented technology to handle precipitated dissolves salts early in the process.
  • Evaporation and Salt Separation: A German MVR-based evaporator, filter presses, and dryers efficiently manage reject streams and separate salts.
  • Water Recovery: Achieving over 98% clean water recovery, with dry solids containing less than 10% moisture content, managed by a solid waste management partner.

Our robust design is capable of absorbing variations in wastewater characteristics and ensures regulatory compliances and reduction in freshwater intake.
